At the heart of Petaling Jaya, Kam Kee Cafe @ The Starling embodies the charm of a traditional cha chaan teng with a modern twist. Located conveniently on the ground floor, this Hong Kong-style cafe offers a delightful escape for families and food enthusiasts alike. Patrons rave about the iconic yeung chow fried rice, celebrated for its impressive portion size and flavor. Many visitors, including Stephen Haerin, praise the well-balanced Hong Kong milk tea that caters to all, making it particularly suitable for seniors.

However, the experience can vary. While Yeong found the signature beef hor fun inconsistent, the ox tongue was a highlight, showcasing robust flavors. Adding to the mix, Irene Teh enjoyed the soft, melt-in-your-mouth steamed eggs that complemented the hearty noodle dishes.

The ambiance, described as clean and family-friendly, is inviting, although some diners noted areas for improvement, especially regarding cleanliness. Overall, Kam Kee Cafe strikes a good balance between variety and value, making it a worthwhile stop for both casual diners and connoisseurs craving authentic Hong Kong fare.

Review highlights

Based on 883 reviews

Kam Kee Cafe @ The Starling is recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere and diverse menu rooted in traditional Hong Kong-style cha chaan teng offerings. Customers frequently appreciate dishes like the yeung chow fried rice and steamed eggs for their balanced portions and comforting textures. The cafe’s hong kong milk tea receives mixed feedback, with some noting a milder sweetness suitable for older patrons, though others find the tea flavor less prominent. While certain signature items such as beef hor fun are praised, inconsistency in taste and seasoning is sometimes reported. The ambiance is generally well-regarded for its cleanliness and décor, though occasional lapses in hygiene and crowded weekends are noted. Overall, the venue is seen as a decent casual dining option with efficient service and a kid-friendly menu.

The yeung chow fried rice they serve here is very good, and the portion is just nice for one person, and their hong kong milk tea is also quite nice not sweet at all, very suitable for the elderly. I came here during the weekend, and there was no long queue. It’s a good place to come with your family.

Been here several times. Their signature beef hor fun can be a hit or miss. Previously it was good but not this round. Black pepper udon with ox tongue was very peppery. The ox tongue was so good though. Oolong tea was strong. Always crowded during the weekends. Nice decor and great ambiance. Cleanliness could be improved. One of the seats at our table looks like some kid dropped food all over the chair and floor and wasn't cleaned up.

Not crowded over the weekend though is lunch time. Milk tea seems dark tea colour but the taste is not there as the evaporated milk taste more than the tea. For both cantonese noodles, the meat was more than the noodles. Taste wise normal. But the fried XO is more salty cum oily and not recomended for diet restrictions. Bakes cheese rice is just normal like others and the cheese amount is not that much.

The steam eggs is soft and melts in the mouth. There's sufficient beef with every mouthful of hor fun. Would enjoy it more if the beef slices were smaller.

Yesterday despite the evening rain, I drove to this cafe in Starling Mall to buy my dinner. Been wanting to eat some Hong Kong style food for a long time. So I ordered a pax of cheese baked macaroni beef bolognese. Only this place can cook it the way I like it. Got to wait about 30 minutes for my food cos it took them some time to cook it. Though it was only about 5 pm there was quite a crowd inside the cafe , eating n drinking already. Either these people were having their tea time there or they were taking their early dinner. Finally my order was ready n the cashier told me he made a mistake for over charging me by a few ringgit. I didn’t realize that n luckily he himself discovered his mistake. So he cancelled my previous payment as I paid using my credit card n then he re issued me another correct payment of RM 22.05. Thank God for such an honest cashier.

I ordered beef hor fun through Grab for my lunch. As this was a takeaway, I cannot comment on the atmosphere of the restaurant. My noodles arrived quite quickly especially as it was lunch time. The food was still hot and pleasingly, was delicious. I will order again from Kam Kee.

Been wanting to try the HK style food here and took me by chance to try it out today. So overall decor was on spot, very comfy and inviting environment. So basically you order your own food via QR code. I ordered the HK milk tea and their signature Cheese Baked Tomato Pork Chop with Egg Fried Rice, Hong Kong Fried Hor Fun with beef slices. So the Hor Fun was good and got the wok qi with somemore thick slices of beef which paired with their signature chillies were awesome 8.1. Then their baked fried rice brings me back to when I visited HK for their baked rice, although it’s good a solid 7.8 but still got room to grow. As for the HK milk tea I give 7.1. Overall I will come again to try their other food.
